I try to be as effective as possible when I am designing. By effective, I mean being able to communicate a message or motif using the least amount of visual content to avoid any distraction from what ever is meant to be communicated. My largest inspirations would be modernist designs that were simplistic in visual content, but filled with purpose. Designers such as Massimo Vignelli and Milton Glaser are large influences in the outcome of my work. Their ideas are seen in my work through my use of geometric shapes and bright colors. Shapes and color are reoccurring themes in my works since they are very basic visual elements that are easy for viewers to follow and understand. However, restricting myself to those modernist aesthetics would hurt my development as a designer, which is why my favorite works incorporate traditional media with my digital pieces.
I enjoy combining drawing and photography with my work to add interest to my pieces. In a book cover design I made for Diary of a Wimpy Kid, I combined drawings over photography to create an aesthetic that fit the story of the book and would attract a young audience to read it. Characters of the story were drawn and placed over a photo of notebook paper to create a stronger contrast between the drawing and real life object. I also designed a package for an imaginary brand of cookies called Queen Bee’s Gourmet Honey Cookies. For this design the shape of the box and colors were very important in creating the identity of this product. The box was a hexagonal prism that was slightly concaved on the sides and the colors were warm and rich brown and gold tones to calm the eye and portray a sense of leisure. My plans after RVCC are to start working as a freelance designer or in a publication company and continue my studies for a Bachelors degree.
